SERIES HISTORY
Pitt holds a 4-1 edge in the series and have won the last three meetings with the Tar Heels. The Panthers won both games last season, including an 82-72 overtime victory in the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. Pitt also came away with a stunning 84-59 victory over No. 8 UNC the last time these two squared off in Pittsburgh on Jan. 8, 2015.
LAST MEETING
North Carolina appeared to have the momentum heading into overtime, but Pitt held on to earn an 82-72 victory over the Tar Heels in the opening game of the 2016 ACC Women's Tournament last March 2nd in Greensboro, N.C. ACC Freshman of the Year Stephanie Watts led North Carolina in scoring with 20 points. Jamie Cherry had 18 points, followed by 14 and 12 points, respectively
by Hillary Summers and Destinee Walker. The win marked Pitt's first in ACC Tournament play since joining the conference in 2013-14.
When it appeared that Pitt would move on to win in regulation with a 67-64 lead, Cherry drained a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to send the game to overtime, her second such last-second heave in as many years in the tournament. In 2014-15, Cherry's 40-footer sent a quarterfinal game against Louisville into overtime, a game the Cardinals would win 77-75. Despite the momentum entering
the overtime period, Carolina could not capitalize as Pitt outscored the Tar Heels 15-5 in the extra session.
LAST TIME OUT
Paris Kea and Stephanie Watts combined for 31 points for North Carolina in a 70-58 loss at No. 12 Duke on Thursday night from Cameron Indoor Stadium. Watts registered her ACC-leading ninth double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Kea led all scorers with 16 points. Duke was paced by a trio of double-figure scorers. Leaonna Odem had 15, while Kyra Lambert and Lexie Brown added 13 and 12, respectively.
The first quarter featured seven lead changes, and the lone three-pointer by Brown was the difference in the Blue Devils holding a slim, 18-17, advantage. Kea scored Carolina's first seven points to get off to a quality start in her inaugural game at Cameron.
The Tar Heels went stone cold from the floor in the second. Kea's jumper 11 seconds into play wound up the only made shot of the quarter as the Tar Heels missed its final 13 shots of the half. The season-low four points scored by Carolina in the quarter allowed Duke to seize momentum in the game and a 36-21 lead at halftime.
