Carolina Shuts Out Visiting UNCG

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina men's tennis team improved to 12-0 on the season with a win Wednesday evening against visiting UNCG at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The start of the match was pushed back an hour due to tornado warnings that delayed the teams' warm-ups, but once the action started the Tar Heels were in control throughout and didn't drop a set.
In doubles, the fourth-ranked team of Robert Kelly and Brett Clark won 6-1 to start, and senior Andrew Gores and freshman Blaine Boyden teamed at the No. 3 spot to lock up the point with a 6-3 win. Tar Heel juniors Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider also won at No. 2, 6-2.
In singles, Kelly was the first off the court, with a 6-2, 6-0 win over William Albright. Clark beat Daniel Mack 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 to put the Tar Heels up 3-0. Murray, playing at No. 3, clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Gaston Murray.
The teams played out the remaining three singles matches, with Boyden winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6, freshman Anu Kodali defeating Warren Bryan 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 and finally Schneider beating Connor Thompson 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1.
The match provided valuable experience, particularly for freshmen Boyden and Kodali. “Any time they can get some singles matches in, it's very good for both of them,” UNC coach Sam Paul said. “We're going to need them – we needed them at national team indoors and the more experience they get, the better.”
The Tar Heels have three more non-conference matches before diving into the Atlantic Coast Conference slate. Next up is a home double-header on Monday, with Campbell visiting at 3 p.m. and NC Central at 7. UNC will host Vanderbilt on March 4 before opening ACC play March 11 at Florida State.
