SENIOR SEASON (2018-19): Reached doubles final at ITA Carolinas Regional tournament in October ... Also reached the Round of 16 in singles
JUNIOR SEASON (2017-18): Posted the team's best singles mark, 23-2, mostly at the No. 5 spot ... Was 1-0 at No. 3, 5-0 at No. 4, 13-2 at No. 5 and 4-0 at No. 6 ... Went 13-3 in doubles, mostly with Benjamin Sigouin at No. 2 (8-3) ... Named to the All-ACC third team after going 11-1 in ACC singles play ... Named to the All-ACC Academic team for the second year ... Named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll
SOPHOMORE SEASON (2016-17): Went 27-8 in singles for the year, 22-4 in dual matches ... Named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team at the No. 6 spot after going 3-1 including three-set, match-clinching wins against Wake Forest (quarterfinals) and Georgia (semifinals), two of the most impactful wins in program history ... Went 10-2 in ACC matches ... Won his first 12 matches of the spring • Played mostly at the No. 6 spot (14-4) but was 2-0 at No. 4 and 6-0 at No. 5 ... Recipient of the team's Iron Ram Award as the top performer in strength and conditioning • Named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll ... Named an ITA Scholar Athlete, an honor that requires a GPA of 3.5 or better for the year
FRESHMAN SEASON (2015-16): Finished with an overall 15-8 singles record • Went 11-4 in dual matches during spring play, mostly at the No. 6 spot • Posted a solid 6-2 record against ACC opponents in singles play • Earned his first collegiate win over Mario Paccini of Elon at the Duke Invitational in Cary • Recorded a 10-7 doubles record: 1-0 with Brett Clark, 2-1 with Andrew Gores, 5-2 with Anu Kodali, and 2-4 with Ronnie Schneider • Named an ITA Scholar Athlete, which requires a GPA of 3.5 or better • Named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll
JUNIOR/PREP: Played four years of tennis at Wakefield High School in Raleigh, N.C. • Won the North Carolina state singles championship as a junior and the doubles title as a senior • Helped his team to state championships in his junior and senior years and was named the Tournament MVP both years • Team captain junior and senior years • Earned High School All-America status in his junior and senior years • Named North Carolina High School Tennis Player of the Year and Wakefield's Male Athlete of the Year as a senior • Won doubles in Boys 18s and 16s Southerns and was a finalist in Boys 16s • Won the 2013 USTA National Doubles Championship • Student council member and honors student at Wakefield, where he also wrote for the school paper.
MORE ON BOYDEN: Full name is Blaine Scott Boyden III • Born in Salt Lake City, Utah • Son of Scott and Pam Boyden • Has one sister, Susanne, who plays tennis at Cal Poly • His grandfather earned All-America honors in swimming at Dartmouth and his father played tennis and soccer at Bucknell.
Why I chose Carolina: the rare combination of world-class academics and athletics.The best part of being a Tar Heel tennis player is: having the honor and privilege to represent the greatest university on the planet on and off the court.
My favorite part about competing for Coach Paul is: his love and compassion for the university and all of his players.
The aspect of my game I've worked on the most since last year is: the mental side of the game.
My greatest strength as a tennis player is: my serve and athleticism.
Favorite tennis memory: storming the court with my best friends after Jack "Clutch" Murray clinched the Indoor National Championship.
Dream doubles partner: toss up between Alec Woodruff, Brandon Metcalf, David Adams, Heath Boyd, Kyle Mckeeman, or Kyle Hartman.
My ideal post-match meal consists of: flank streak and mashed potatoes.
My favorite sport, other than tennis, is: soccer.
Outside of tennis, I like to spend time: kicking back and hanging out with my friends.
Favorite movie: Step Brothers.
Favorite class taken at UNC: BUSI 101.
My go-to karaoke song is: Don't Stop Believing.
My dream job is: to be a CEO of a Fortune 500 company.
