Tar Heels Top UCLA To Advance To Championship Match

UNC, ranked No. 7 nationally, is just the third ACC team ever to make the finals at National Team Indoors. (Virginia and Clemson are the others). UCLA, a seven-time winner of this tournament, is ranked No. 9 and fell to 7-2 with the loss.
Playing at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va., the Bruins, who have won this tournament on seven previous occasions, claimed the doubles point to go up 1-0. Carolina's No. 2 team of Jack Murray and Brayden Schnur won 6-4, but UCLA claimed the other two spots to take the lead.
Schneider continued his strong play in Charlottesville, beating #80 Gage Brymer 6-0, 6-4. at the No. 2 spot to draw the Tar Heels even. After UCLA picked up another point with a 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 1, senior Brett Clark pulled out a second singles win at No. 3, defeating #37 Martin Redlicki 7-5, 6-4. He fought off two break points at 6-5 to win the first set and went on to avenge a three-set loss to Redlicki in their last matchup, at the 2015 National Team Indoors Round of 16 in Chicago.
With the score tied, two Tar Heels fought back to victories after having dropped the first set. At No. 6, freshman Anu Kodali fell 6-4 to Austin Rapp in the opener, but came back to win 6-3 and 6-3 to claim the point. The match-winner came from Robert Kelly at No. 5. He too lost the first set 6-4, but came back to beat Logan Staggs 6-2 and 6-3 for the Tar Heel victory.
Virginia beat TCU 4-1 in Sunday's second semifinal to set up the championship. The Cavaliers are 8-0 and ranked No. 1.
