Carolina Overwhelms Coppin State, 90-55

CHAPEL HILL - Led by Destinee Walker's 21 points, four players scored in double figures to send North Carolina to a 90-55 victory over Coppin State on Wednesday afternoon from Carmichael Arena.
Walker registered her second-straight game with at least 20 points after putting up 25 last time out against Jacksonville. Stephanie Watts notched her sixth double-double of the season, tying Virginia Tech's Sidney Cook for the most in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The sophomore sharpshooter had 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Paris Kea was one rebound shy of her own double-double with 17 points and nine boards. Jamie Cherry offered up 10 points, six rebounds and five assists.
It took Watts, the third-leading scorer in the ACC, less than four minutes to get into double figures. Her corner three-pointer put UNC up 17-4 with six minutes, 37 seconds left in the first quarter.
Watts ended up with 14 points in the period, pacing Carolina to a 37-10 lead, marking the most points in a single quarter by the Tar Heels this season. UNC shot a staggering 63.2 percent (15-of-24) from the field.
Coppin State (0-11) showed some fight in the second with a 10-0 run, but still trailed 47-22 midway through the stanza.
The Tar Heels scored nine of the final 10 points of the first half to take a 56-23 lead into halftime.
A slow start by both clubs in the third quarter saw the margin change slightly in favor of the home team. Later, Walker closed the period with a three-pointer and Carolina led by 40, 75-35.
Genesis Lucas scored 16 points to lead the Lady Eagles.
North Carolina shot 51.5 percent for the game, its second game in a row ascending the 50-percent plateau, and third occasion of the season.
North Carolina (10-2) hosts South Carolina State on Friday at 2 p.m.
