Coach Sylvia Hatchell
Opening Statement
“Charleston Southern played a good game. They have some tough kids out there. They had what, four kids in double figures [scoring]. They didn't quit and kept chewing at us out there and hanging in there and stuff. We didn't play our best game defensively. I thought we'd been already on our way to the Bahamas. But anyway, I want to give credit to them. Fred [Applin] has done a great job. Fed was here back as an assistant coach back in the 90s. In fact, he actually recruited Marion Jones, and Sylvia Crawley and a bunch of those kids. A lot of our games that we play is because of former players and coaches, like Fred this time and Bucknell, Martina Wood, was one of our players, was an assistant coach there. So we try to do that. We're proud of Fred and his scrappy little team because they were tough. They were hustling hard out there. But we pulled out a win. Stephanie [Watts] had a great game. She had 10 for 14 from the three – new ACC record [for three-pointers by an individual in a game]. And I've said this many times, nobody gets in the gym and shoots more than Stephanie. She's here in the morning. She's here at night. I think the only time she's not here in the gym is when she's in class. So it pays off. She had a great game, 39 points, and gosh she had four steals. We won't mention those turnovers. And she's just going to get better and better. She's working hard on her defense and everything. You know this kid will be an All-American before it's all over with, and she works really, really hard for it. We had a lot of defensive breakdowns out there. Our rebounding wasn't what we wanted it to be, but again you've got to give Charleston Southern a lot of credit.”
Turnovers
“No I was not happy with [our turnovers]. We had some careless turnovers, and usually it's the other way around. The other team usually has a whole lot more than we have, but we just weren't quite as focused as we needed to be today. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't the game that I was expecting us to play. Again, I don't want to take anything away from Charleston Southern because they had a lot to do with that.”
Stephanie Watts, Sophomore Guard
On breaking ACC record for three-point field goals made in a game by an individual
“I guess it's a good feeling. My teammates were just able to find me whenever I was open on the court. It's a cool feeling. I've been working hard, so just to have it pay off and for the team to look so good tonight was a good feeling, except for defense.”
On knowing she was breaking the record
“No not at all. I think they even announced it after the game, and I still didn't hear it. I think one of my teammates told me they'd just said it on the speaker after the game. My shots were falling in warm-ups, so I was just looking to shoot three's and take them in the games. Like I said, my teammates just kept finding me whenever I was open for a split second on the court which made it easy for me to knock them down.”
