Carolina Eases Past Alabama A&M
November 18, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Watts, the 2016 ACC Freshman of the Year, caught fire in the second half with 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. She hauled in 11 rebounds for her eighth career double-double, and tied a personal best with six makes from three-point land.
Jamie Cherry and Paris Kea each added 10 points.
North Carolina scored 16 of the first 18 points of the game and never looked back in the lopsided victory, improving the Tar Heels to a 2-0 record early in the season.
UNC came out as white hot as their home jersey color, going 6-of-9 from the field for a 16-2 advantage. But the offense stalled out as the opening quarter progressed, making only one of its last 10 attempts, but still held a 22-12 lead.
In the second quarter, Taylor Koenen and Watts drained consecutive three-pointers directly in front of the Lady Bulldog bench to open a 20-point edge before Carolina went into halftime up 36-14. Alabama A&M was limited to a measly two points in the second.
Watts fueled a 10-0 third-quarter run with her second 3-ball of the night, increasing the lead to 48-16 midway into the stanza. She would score 11 points alone in the third and her club led 60-20 heading to the final 10 minutes.
Carolina forced the Lady Bulldogs into 35 give aways, and turned those into 37 points. The Tar Heels also had 18 steals and 18 assists.
Jameica Cobb led Alabama A&M (0-3) with 25 points. She scored all 14 of her teams points in the first half.
Next up, UNC hosts Bucknell on Sunday at 6 p.m.
