Tar Heels Advance With Win Over Indiana

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 10th-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team topped visiting Indiana 4-1 Saturday to advance in ITA Kickoff Weekend play. The Tar Heels will take on No. 40 NC State, a 4-2 winner over No. 35 Drake Saturday, for a spot in the National Team Indoors Feb. 12-15 in Charlottesville, Va.
The Tar Heels improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.
In Sunday's matchups, Drake and No. 50 Indiana will face off at 9:30 a.m. and conference rivals UNC and NC State will play at 1 p.m. There is no charge for admission to the action at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Playing at No. 3 singles, Brett Clark clinched the team victory for the Tar Heels with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Raheel Manji. The senior from Naples, Fla., won the first-set tiebreaker and then made sure the second set wasn't nearly as close. He also helped UNC to the doubles point, winning 6-4 at the No. 1 spot with sophomore Robert Kelly.
Before Clark and Kelly clinched the doubles point, senior Brayden Schnur and junior Jack Murray won 6-0 at No. 2. Junior Ronnie Schneider and freshman Blaine Boyden were on the way to victory at No. 3 when play was halted.
In singles, Murray was the first off the court after a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4. Kelly also won quickly, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5.
At No. 1 singles, the Hoosiers picked up their one point as Sam Monette defeated Schnur 7-6 (6), 6-3. Clark then clinched the match with his win. The No. 2 singles match was halted with Indiana's Bednarczyk having taken the first set but UNC's Schneider leading 5-2 in the second. At No. 6, UNC freshman Anudeep Kodali won the first set 7-5 and was tied at 4-4 in the second.
