
UNC Starts Off Season With Two Dominant Wins

CHAPEL HILL, NC—The No. 4-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team kicked off the dual match season with wins over Elon and Appalachian State Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
In the first match against Elon, 16th-ranked duo Jessie Aney and Kate Vialle took an early 2-0 lead and never looked back in their 6-0 victory over Kirsten Ward/Natalia Janowicz.
Ashley Dai and Chloe Ouellet-Pizer downed Olivia Lucas and Suzanne Zenoni 6-2 to secure the doubles point.
In the singles matches, No. 6 Hayley Carter swept Olivia Lucas 6-0, 6-0 to put the Tar Heels up 2-0.
No. 68 Aney took an early 3-0 lead en route to her second sweep of the day, a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ward to make the Carolina lead 3-0.
Vialle swept Janowicz 6-0 in the first set and took the second 6-1 to give Carolina the 4-0 win.
No. 94 Cassandra Vazquez won her first set 6-1 over Taylor Casey before taking the 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Marika Akkerman won the first set over Erica Braschi 6-4, but Braschi won 3-6, 3-1 by retirement.
No. 112 Ouellet-Pizer won a close first set 6-4 over Zenoni before finishing 6-4, 6-2.
In the second match against Appalachian State, Carter/Vazquez dominated early with a 6-0 win over Mackenzie LaSure and Devin Knors.
Aney/Vialle clinched the doubles point for the Tar Heels with a 6-2 win over Clare Cox and Melissa Machado.
In singles, Aney was the first to take her singles' set, as she downed Machado 6-0, 6-1 to put Carolina up 2-0.
Vialle earned her second win of the day with a 6-0, 6-0 win over LaSure.
Carter followed closely behind with a 6-0, 6-0 over Cox to clinch the Carolina win.
Ouellet-Pizer beat Gabrielle Wreder 6-0, 6-1 in her match.
Maggie Kane defeated Taylor Bygrave 6-0, 6-2.
Vazquez took the first set 6-3, but Heidi Swope rallied back to take a 4-2 lead in the second set. Vazquez battled, though, and ultimately won the match 6-3, 7-5.
The Tar Heels return to action in the Freeman Memorial Championship next weekend in Las Vegas.
