CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 14 North Carolina men's tennis team fell to No. 8 Virginia 6-1 on Friday at Boar's Head Sports Club. With the loss, the Tar Heels drop to 14-7 (3-2 ACC), while the Cavaliers improve to 13-3 (6-0 ACC).
Virginia gained the early edge in doubles after earning victories on courts one and two.
At the No. 2 spot, the Tar Heels' sophomore duo of Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider fell to the No. 54 pair of Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Mac Styslinger 8-2. The Cavaliers clinched the point in a back-and-forth match at the top doubles spot, where Virginia's eighth-ranked pair of Ryan Shane and Luca Corinteli topped Carolina's 27th-ranked pair of seniors Esben Hess-Olesen and Oystein Steiro 8-6.
UNC's combination of junior Brett Clark and freshman Robert Kelly led Mitchell Frank and Collin Altamirano 7-6 on court three when Virginia secured the point.
Singles play, which was limited to three courts due to a concurrent women's match, saw the Cavaliers finish off the Tar Heels with wins at the top three spots.
No. 29 Mitchell Frank bested No. 69 Brett Clark 6-0, 6-1 on court two for the Cavaliers first singles triumph, and No. 6 Ryan Shane followed up with a 7-5, 6-3 defeat of No. 24 Ronnie Schneider on court one to extend Virginia's lead to 3-0. Collin Altamirano, ranked 55th nationally, provided the clincher for the Cavaliers by notching a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Jack Murray on court three.
In the remaining singles matches, No. 99 Robert Kelly fell 7-5, 6-2 on court four, but Oystein Steiro responded for Carolina by dismissing the Cavaliers' Henrik Wiersholm 6-3, 6-4 on court five. Junior Stuart DePaolo then fell 7-5, 6-1 on court six to conclude the nearly five-hour-long match.
Sophomore Brayden Schnur, ranked No. 12 in the ITA's most recent poll, missed his sixth consecutive match due to injury.
Due to inclement weather, the match was moved indoors in advance of the 3 p.m. start.
The Tar Heels will look to bounce back on Sunday when they visit No. 16 Virginia Tech. First serve is set for noon.
