#1 UNC Tops Notre Dame, 5-2
March 13, 2015 | Women's Tennis
North Carolina (16-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) won the opening doubles point, but it was't easy over a Notre Dame team that boasted a pair of ranked doubles teams. UNC gained early momentum with a win by 18th ranked Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay on court three, 8-4.
However, ND saw its 21st ranked tandem of Quinn Gleason and Monica Robinson garner an 8-5 win over No. 12 Caroline Price and Jamie Loeb on court one, meaning court two would decide the critical first point. The Tar Heels would remain perfect in doubles when 36th ranked Kate Vialle and Ashley Dai came out on top, 8-5, over No. 55 Julie Vrabel and Allison Miller.
UNC quickly took that early lead and expanded on it with consecutive wins on courts 2, 3 and 4 to secure the road victory over the Irish. First it was No. 14 Carter on court two, followed by No. 16 Price on court three and 61st ranked Kay on four made it a 4-0 advantage after all three won in straight sets.
Notre Dame (8-5, 3-2 ACC) got a point on court six with a win by Jane Fennelly, but No. 8 Jamie Loeb answered right back with a victory on court one, rallying for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision over Gleason.
The Irish got their second win on court five when Allison Miller upended No. 66 Dai in three sets.
Carolina plays at Louisville on Sunday at 11 a.m.
