Carolina Topped By No. 3 Virginia In ITA Consolation Match

CHICAGO – In a rare out-of-conference bout with Virginia on Sunday, the No. 7 North Carolina men's tennis team fell to the third-ranked Cavaliers 4-0 as a part of the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship consolation round at Midtown Athletic Club in Chicago. UNC drops to 9-3 on the season, with all three of its losses coming against top-10 foes. Virginia improves to 7-1 with the win.
The Tar Heels failed to snag the doubles point for only the second time all season on Sunday. Virginia's pair of Collin Altamirano and Mitchell Frank defeated Carolina's sophomore tandem of Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider 6-2 on court three, setting up the Wahoos' 37th-ranked pair of Luca Corinteli and Ryan Shane for the clincher on court one. Corinteli and Shane were able to outlast the Tar Heels' duo of sophomore Brayden Schnur and senior Oystein Steiro 6-4.
Virginia went on to secure its 4-0 victory with singles wins on courts two, four and six. Altamirano registered the Cavaliers first singles win on court four with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Steiro. Virginia's fourth-ranked Shane then notched a 6-3, 6-4 win over Carolina's 19th-ranked Schneider to move the team points to 3-0.
JC Aragone sealed the match on court six, handing UNC's 75th-ranked freshman Robert Kelly his first career dual-match loss, 6-1, 6-3.
The remaining three singles matches were suspended. On court three, Tar Heel junior Brett Clark was in the midst of a close third set with top-ranked Thai-Son Kwiatkowski.
Carolina will continue its challenging out-of-conference slate with a visit to No. 9 Texas on Friday at 6 p.m. The Longhorns' only loss this season came against eighth-ranked Ohio State on Friday in the first round of the ITA Team Indoors.
