
Four UNC Fencers Earn Top 10 Finishes At Temple Open

Four North Carolina fencers earned top-10 finishes Saturday and Sunday at the Temple Open, the first collegiate competition of the Tar Heels' 2015-16 season. Freshman Connor Ritchey finished tied for third in men's sabre and junior Amanda Lalezarian tied for sixth in women's foil in the best Carolina finishes.
In the women's competition on Saturday in Philadelphia, Lalezarian's top 10 foil finish was followed by classmate Gabrielle D'Astoli in 14th and then three freshmen: Sydney Persing in 18th, Alicia Chen in 29th and Tori McDermott in 34th.
The Tar Heels also got a top 10 finish in women's sabre, with sophomore Meredith Bozentka finishing eighth. Junior Sarah Hanvy placed 18th, sophomore Noa Allen 27th and freshman Caitlin Gallant 28th.
In women's epee, sophomore Sara Morena placed 16th, freshman Erin O'Neill 21st, sophomore Samantha Galina 22nd and freshman Beni Mathieu 32nd.
In the men's competition on Sunday, Ritchey led the way with his third-place finish. Freshman Matthew Garrelick placed 13th, junior Theophilus Onigbinde 27th and sophomore Griffin Morehead 41st.
Freshman Jason Xu placed eighth in men's epee, junior Michael Gopman Slonim placed 11th, and sophomore Adeyemi Olatunde took 46th.
In men's foil, sophomore Gabe Foster placed 15th, senior Jake Bernstein was 24th, freshman Ian Head was 30th and junior Ezra Baeli-Wang was 35th.
