UNC Headed to Quarterfinals in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. –No. 2-seed Hayley Carter and junior Whitney Kay advanced to the singles quarterfinals on the opening day of the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex. The duo also advanced to the second round of the doubles bracket.
Carter, recently back from a wrist injury, handily defeated Montana Morgan of Stanford 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. In the second round, she beat Terri Fleming of UCLA in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Kay dominated Anna Mamalat of TAMU with a 6-2, 6-1 finish in the first round. She went on to upset the No. 44-ranked Zoe Scandalis of USC in an exciting match. Kay lost the first set 2-6 to the No. 5-seed in the tournament before rallying in the second set with a 7-6 win (20-18 tiebreak) before closing the match with a 6-3 third set.
Marika Akkerman also triumphed over Alexis Garrett of UNLV 6-1, 6-1. She fell, however, to No. 7-seed Gabby Smith of USC 6-2, 6-1, in the second round.
Cassandra Vazquez lost to No. 4-seed Guiliani Olmos of USC 6-3, 6-3 in the first round. She battled in her consolation match but ultimately fell to Eva Paalma of TAMU 5-7, 6-1, 7-5.
Kay/Carter defeated Anett Ferenczi-Bako and Alexis Garrett of UNLV 6-1 in the first round.
Akkerman/Vazquez fell to Gabby Smith and Madison Westby of USC 6-1 in their match.
Doubles quarterfinals will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, followed by singles quarterfinals and singles semifinals in the afternoon.
