No. 2 Tar Heels Top No. 1 Maryland, 3-1
September 6, 2014 | Field Hockey
UNC improved to 3-0 with the win, while Maryland fell to 2-1 in what is now a nonconference battle after the Terrapins' move from the Atlantic Coast Conference to the Big Ten this season.
"I told the girls before the game that it's an honor and a privilege for anyone, in any sport, to play in a 1-vs.-2 game," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It doesn't happen all that often and I didn't wan them to take games like this for granted.
"I'm proud of my team for earning a tough win. This was a hard-fought, gutty game."
On a steamy afternoon in College Park - the heat was draining enough that the teams agreed beforehand to take a timeout in each half - Carolina led through most of the game after scoring 4:17 into the match. On the Tar Heels' only penalty corner of the first half, senior Charlotte Craddock delivered a hard shot that put her team up 1-0. Senior Loren Shealy and junior Emily Wold assisted on the play.
The first half saw no more scoring, with UNC totaling just five shots and Maryland only four. After halftime, the game stayed at 1-0 until the 51st minute. The Tar Heels drew two penalty corners, but were unable to score on either. A minute after the second one however, Shealy grabbed the ball out of the air off a rebound and scored to put UNC up 2-0. "It was a spectacular goal," Shelton said.
The Tar Heels' third goal came in the 67th minute of play. On UNC's fifth and final penalty corner, Craddock's initial shot was blocked. Sophomore Julia Young grabbed the rebound and scored the first goal of her career, adding some offense to an outstanding defensive game. "Julia Young was stellar," Shelton said. "Sam Travers was stellar. Overall, I'm very proud of our defensive effort and toughness - it's not often you come to Maryland and hold them to one penalty corner. We did a nice job of keeping their attack at bay. "
Maryland's sole goal came with 2:05 on the clock on the Terrapins' only corner of the game. Steffi Schneid had the goal, assisted by Katie Gerzabeck and Anna Dessoye.
"They had a really good crowd and we fought hard," Shelton said. "I'm just proud of our kids for getting a great win."
Maryland won both of the teams' matchups last season, including 2-0 in the ACC Championship game. The last time UNC beat the Terrapins was in the 2012 conference title game.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a game at Delaware on Sunday at noon. The battle with the Blue Hens is a rematch of last season's NCAA first round game in Chapel Hill, which Carolina won 6-2. UNC's next home game is its conference opener, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. against Syracuse.
