September 13, 2014 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 17 UNC used their depth and athleticism to overwhelm Georgia Southern 3-0 (25-22, 25-9, 25-14) on Saturday, and earn their second victory of the 2014 Carolina Classic.
North Carolina (6-1) played 14 players in the match, and had seven attackers register multiple kills.
The Tar Heels were led by Taylor Treacy, who had eight kills and one block on a .294 hitting percentage. Lauren McAdoo added in eight kills, and Ece Taner had 15 digs for Carolina.
Chaniel Nelson had seven kills and seven blocks for the Tar Heels, as she and Taner anchored a UNC defense that held Georgia Southern to a .012 hitting percentage and forced 25 hitting errors in the match.
“It was important to have the energy continue from last night's match,” said sophomore setter Abigail Curry. “I think we did a good job following through with the expectations of our team, going out and playing hard each match.”
Despite some offensive miscues, UNC took set one 25-22 behind three kills each from McAdoo and Nelson. The Tar Heels started the set with a 6-0 lead, but the Eagles rallied on the serve of Kym Coley to bring the score to 10-9.
UNC immediately went on a run to push the score up to 17-12, behind kills from Paige Neuenfeldt and Leigh Andrew. Carolina would finish the set off with a kill from Treacy, who had two kills in set one.
In set two, the Tar Heels corrected earlier errors and dominated the game, outhitting the Eagles .750 to .091. Tatiana Durr knocked down five kills and added a block in the frame en route to a 25-9 victory for UNC.
Carolina continued the strong play in set three, using a service run from McAdoo to break the set open. Chaniel Nelson added two kills in the set, and Keimaya Hunter registered her first career block late in the set.
An attack error from Jamie DeRatt, who had six kills and four digs for Georgia Southern, gave the third set to UNC 25-14, and the match 3-0.
“It is a good sign that we can come out and stick to our gameplan, no matter who is on court,” said Tatiana Durr.
“Our coaches work really hard to keep us all prepared and ready to contribute when an opportunity arises. We all really support each other, and it is great for our team that we have so many people who can step in and be effective.”
Durr came of the bench to provide six kills, two digs, and four blocks in just two sets of action. Heather Gearhart added in five digs, and freshman Beth Nordhorn had two kills and two blocks on a .667 hitting percentage.
The Tar Heels return to the court at 7 p.m. on Saturday, facing off against VCU in the final match of the Carolina Classic.
