- Jonathan Campbell (men's soccer) and Alex Bales (football) are in Costa Rica with a Kenan-Flagler Business School Global Immersion elective. Check out the latest from Costa Rica on their blog.
- Kelsey Barnhill (women's fencing) is traveling, volunteering with UN Women and studying geology in India. Here's an update from shortly after she arrived:
Hey Tar Heels, greetings from New Delhi!
After 22 hours on a plane I finally landed in India Saturday night. My first impression was that there were a ton of people awake for midnight and all out on the street. I also didn't know there would be wild dogs everywhere. I'm staying with family friends for the next three weeks. The mom works for UN Women where I will be volunteering. The UN demands that she has guards so there is always a guard on duty 24/7 outside the house.
On Sunday I went shopping at the local market to get clothes for work. The standard outfit is really comfortable although it can get pretty hot since women have to wear pants and cover their shoulders despite the 100-degree weather. I then ate at an Indian restaurant and got my first taste of authentic food. I had jackfruit curry and it was really good. When we drove back to the house I saw there was a zoo right next to the house, which explained all the weird noises. I get woken up by the peacocks every morning!
On Monday I went to work for the first time. I took a taxi with another volunteer to a conference, which was quite an adventure. I saw three cows in the street and horse-drawn buggies. The traffic is crazy and pedestrians just run across the street whenever. At the conference I got introduced to my job, which is in the evaluation department. The conference was on utilization-focused evaluations. I don't know what my assignments will entail yet but the topic seems interesting. I had a great lunch at the meeting as well as dinner back home. I have been lucky with food so far but I have to take extra precautions with everything. I have only been eating cooked foods and drinking bottled water. I even brush my teeth with bottled water. Today I will be going back to the conference to hear about different evaluations done in Delhi. I'm really excited about what the rest of the trip will bring!
Until next week,
Kelsey
