CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. – Carolina volleyball went on the road and clipped the Boston College Eagles 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-20) Friday night in Power Gym.
“Even though it was an awkward match, statistically we played really well,” said Head Coach Joe Sagula.
“We had many people step up and contribute tonight, and several players turned in dominant performances, particularly Victoria and Ece.”
Ece Taner led the No. 8 Tar Heels with 19 digs in the match as UNC held BC to a .175 hitting percentage and forced 20 BC attack errors.
Victoria McPherson poured in 12 kills with 4 blocks for Carolina, while Hayley McCorkle added seven kills, two digs and one block in the match.
Jordyn Schnabl just missed her third double-double of the season by tossing up 20 assists with 9 digs.
“Boston College played a feisty match tonight and they are a team who plays well at home. This was a solid win to start November and the last third of conference play,” said Sagula.
Schnabl and her setting counterpart Abigail Curry combined to lead the Tar Heels to a .333 hitting percentage for the match. North Carolina hit above .300 in two of the three sets against the Eagles, including a scorching .394 hitting percentage in set one.
UNC grabbed an early 5-3 lead in the first frame before the Eagles rallied to tie at 6-6. The Tar Heels battled BC throughout the early part of set one, but Boston College grabbed its largest lead of the set at 11-9.
The momentum shifted for UNC after Lauren McAdoo ended a long rally with a kill to give the Tar Heels a 13-12 lead. North Carolina grew the lead to 19-13 after another kill from McAdoo and then cruised to a 25-20 set one victory.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in set two thanks to an ace from Sol Calvete, and built their largest lead at 8-5. The Tar Heels rallied and took the lead at 13-12 after forcing a BC hitting error. A kill from Neuenfeldt, followed by a block by Taylor Treacy and Neuenfeldt, solidified UNC's lead as the Tar Heels would not trail again in set two.
A kill by McCorkle gave Carolina a 20-16 lead, then an ace from Schnabl gave the Tar Heels a 22-16 lead. Carolina closed out set two 25-18 with a kill from McPherson, her fourth kill of the frame.
Much like the first two sets, BC and UNC continued to battle early. The Tar Heels grabbed their first lead in the frame at 4-3 after an ace by Taner, then pushed their advantage to 10-7 behind a kill from Neuenfeldt.
The Eagles refused to fold at home and stormed back to tie the game at 11-11. A Boston College service error was paired with an ace by Schnabl to give the Tar Heels a 13-11 lead.
A great slide-kill by McPherson gave UNC a 16-12 lead, then Andrew pounded a backrow kill for an 18-14 advantage.
North Carolina grabbed a 23-18 lead after Beth Nordhorn pounded her third kill of the set, then finished game three off 25-20 thanks to a kill by McPherson.
Beth Nordhorn added three kills on a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage in one set of play. Lauren McAdoo added four kills and two digs, while Leigh Andrew had five kills and three digs.
Paige Neuenfeldt rounded out the strong offensive performance with six kills on a .444 hitting percentage.
Ece Taner continued her rise through the UNC volleyball record books, as her career digs total pushed to 1,394 digs. This places her as No. 5 all-time in career digs at North Carolina, just passing All-ACC performer Molly Pyles in the record book.
The Tar Heels (19-2, 10-1 ACC) will return to Chapel Hill to host Virginia Tech for a 2 p.m. match on Sunday. Admission is free and it is the second installment of the UNC volleyball Team Day, where players of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to attend with their teams and cheer on the Tar Heels.
