Craven Scores 3 In 6-0 NCAA Win Over JMU
November 21, 2014 | Men's Soccer
North Carolina (13-5-1) will face 10th-seed Charlotte on Sunday at 2 p.m.
It took nearly the entire first half for Carolina to break loose of the Dukes' compacted setup, but when Craven found the back of the net in the 42nd minute it broke open the floodgates for the home-standing Tar Heels.
The lead remained 1-0 into intermission, but doubled to 2-0 just 89 seconds into the second half when Rob Lovejoy cleaned up a deflection off the initial shot from Craven in the 47th minute.
The second goal seemed to unhinge the Dukes as their captain Josh Grant was shown a straight-red card only 15 seconds after Lovejoy scored his third goal of the year.
Down to 10 men, Craven took immediate advantage by beating the goalie one-on-one for a 3-0 lead in the 54th minute.
James Madison (10-8-4) went down another man in the 62nd minute when Tim Whitebread earned a place on the sidelines with a red card.
Craven converted his second “hat trick” of the year when Alan Winn set him up for his 14th goal of the season in the 70th minute. The first team All-ACC selection is now just one goal shy of the national lead held by Neco Brett of Robert Morris and Cameron Porter of Princeton.
Winn scored in the 79th minute for his third goal of the season, and senior Glen Long converted his first-and-only shot of the night to cap the scoring festivities at six goals for the Tar Heels.
UNC held a 24-2 shot advantage, and forced JMU keepers Kyle Morten and Bill Groen to make nine saves.
The match was also the final one for JMU head coach Tom Martin. The active wins leader in Division I, Martin coached for 38 seasons - 29 at James Madison - compiling 477 career victories, the fifth most in history.
