Tar Heels Celebrate Senior Day With Shutout Win
October 26, 2014 | Field Hockey
"It was a good day for the Tar Heels," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I'm really proud of our group. Back-to-back games is important for our training and I thought, particularly early in the first half, we played very well, moved the ball around, shared it unselfishly, and had quick results. It was a really nice weekend and a nice tribute to the seniors to honor them with a great Tar Heel victory."
Carolina improved to 15-2 with the win, the Tar Heels' sixth shutout of the year and third in the last four games. Pacific fell to 5-12.
Coming off a 3-1 Saturday win over No. 11 Wake Forest that earned UNC a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title, the Tar Heels started fast. The gamewinner came in the second minute of play from junior Emma Bozek, who took a pass from classmate Emily Wold in front of the cage to score her seventh goal of the season and kick off a big day. By halftime, the business major from Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. would have a hat trick, providing the first, third and fifth goals toward a 5-0 halftime lead.
UNC scored on its first three shots of the day. After Bozek's first goal, the Tar Heels scored on penalty corners just over a minute apart. In the fifth minute, junior Nina Notman blasted a shot past Pacific goalkeeper Laura Pujade to make it 2-0. Notman was assisted by Wold and Shealy. In the seventh minute, on another penalty corner, Notman took the initial shot and Bozek deflected it up and into the cage.
In the 12th minute, following a defensive save by Pacific's Emma Leach, Shealy grabbed the rebound and shot from the left side of the cage for a 4-0 lead. In the 32nd minute, on a fast break, Bozek received a long pass from Notman and sent a shot from the left side of the circle into the right corner of the cage for a 5-0 lead at the break.
After halftime, the Tar Heels added two more. In the 46th minute of play, redshirt freshman Sam Night scored her third career goal, carrying the ball into the circle to shoot from in front of the cage. The final goal was from Travers, on a penalty corner in the 49th minute. Frey and sophomore Julia Young assisted.
Craddock was sidelined by an injury, but the four seniors who started the game all finished with statistics: Shealy had a goal and an assist, Travers had a goal, Frey had an assist and Ammer earned the shutout win in goal, playing all 70 minutes with one save. Craddock remains the team's goals leader with 11 this season, despite not playing in the past six games.
"It's a remarkable class and I'm really proud of all of our seniors," Shelton said. "They've had a tremendous amount of success throughout their careers. This year has been a joy and they've provided the leadership for the team."
UNC closes the regular season on Nov. 2 with a game at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. After that the Tar Heels look ahead to the ACC Tournament, in which they'll play as the No. 2 seed, meeting No. 7 seed Duke on Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m. in Durham.
