ATHENS, Ga. --- No. 7 North Carolina got singles wins from Tessa Lyons and Caroline Price but fell to tenth-seeded Miami, 4-2, in the NCAA round of 16 early Friday morning at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia. Carolina ends its dual match season with a record of 24-7.
Storms in the area pushed the start of the match to after 9 p.m. and doubles was played on the Feild Stadium courts. No. 4 Shinann Featherston and Lauren McHale got things started at the top position, defeating No. 20 Melissa Bolivar and Liat Zimmerman, 8-4.
No. 76 Lina Lineikite and Gabriela Mejia then evened the point at one match apiece with their 8-4 win over Haley Hemm and Lyons on court two. Miami (21-4) would clinch the point on court three as Anna Bartenstein and Brittany Dubins won the last two games to top Price and Gina Suarez-Malaguti, 8-6.
Play then moved down to the McWhorter Courts after a short delay to allow for the conclusion of the Duke-Virginia match.
UNC won opening sets on courts three, four and five and soon saw itself in front in the dual for the first time.
Lyons, who moved up to the No. 5 position after McHale was taken out of the lineup, made quick work of Zimmerman, 6-1, 6-1, to even the match at 1.
Georgia native Price then put the Tar Heels up 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory on court three.
But Miami (21-4) would regain the lead with a pair of straight-set wins at the top and bottom of the lineup.
No. 18 Bartenstein squared the dual at 2, defeating No. 38 Zoe De Bruycker on court one, 6-2, 6-4. Dubins then made it 3-2 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Hemm on court six.
From there, Carolina needed both of the remaining matches in order to advance.
Suarez-Malaguti looked poised to finish off Bolivar on several occasions at the No. 4 position, while Featherston fell down a set and a break on court two.
Trailing 2-5 in the second to No. 27 Mejia, Featherston fought off four match points in a nine-deuce game to extend the match. The Rockaway Park, N.Y., senior then spoiled three more and, after quickly falling behind love-40, won five straight points to get back on serve at 4-5.
Unfortunately, however, Bolivar would win the final three games on court four to take the match, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, and send the Hurricanes into the quarterfinals.
The loss ends the dual match careers of seniors Featherston, Hemm and Jennifer Stone, a trio that led UNC to a pair of ACC titles, three trips to the NCAA round of 16 an the 2010 national semifinals.
Featherston, along with teammates McHale and De Bruycker, will compete in the NCAA individual events that follow the team championship. Draws for those events will be available next week.
