GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Doubles tandems from the North Carolina women's tennis team won six of nine matches on the opening day of the Furman Fall Classic Friday at the Mickel Tennis Center. Inclement weather pushed singles play to Saturday so all three rounds of the doubles competition was played indoors Friday.
In flight one, Haley Hemm and Lauren McHale fell to the top-ranked duo of Keri Wong and Josipa Bek from Clemson, 8-3, before rallying for a pair of wins. The Tar Heel pair defeated No. 27 Courtney McLane and Taylor Lindsey of Alabama, 8-5, and took fifth place with a 7-4 (ret.) win over Carolina De los Santos and Mia Vriens of Florida State.
Zoe De Bruycker and Tessa Lyons also suffered an opening round loss before winning a pair of matches to take fifth place. After an 8-3 loss to Ashleigh Antal and Chelsea Preeg of Vanderbilt, the UNC tandem defeated Margaret Boyette and Amanda Murray of Furman, 8-5, and South Carolina's Jose Andersson and Katerina Papova, 8-6.
In flight three, Laura Slater and Caroline Price opened play with an 8-4 win over Vanderbilt's Nelly Radeva and Megan Gornet. Slater and Price then advanced to the championship match with a 9-8 (4) victory over Clemson's Klara Vyskocilova and Monika Kochanova before falling to Alabama's MaryAnn MacFarland and Emily Zabor, 8-6.
Singles play is set to begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with first and second round matches. Weather permitting, championship singles matches will be held on Sunday.
