CHAPEL HILL --- No. 3 North Carolina returned to its winning ways Saturday, taking care of No. 12 Georgia Tech, 5-2, on an overcast day at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels got singles wins from Zoe De Bruycker, Jelena Durisic, Gina Suarez-Malaguti and Tessa Lyons to improve to 19-4 and 8-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference action. Georgia Tech fell to 11-7 and 4-4 in the league.
After dropping the doubles point against Duke on Wednesday, Carolina shuffled its lineup and it paid immediate dividends.
Shinann Featherston moved down to the No. 2 position with Durisic and the captains made quick work of their opponents, scoring a comprehensive 8-1 win over Lynn Blau and Elizabeth Kilborn.
Georgia Tech briefly pulled even with an 8-3 win on court one before Lyons and Haley Hemm finished off Sasha Krupina and Christina Ngo at No. 3, 8-3, to clinch the point.
A trio of straight-set wins in singles gave the Tar Heels the necessary four points to claim the dual match.
Suarez-Malaguti was first to finish for UNC on court five, defeating Krupina, 6-1, 6-4.
Durisic then made it 3-0 on court two, as the Torrance, Calif., senior continued her standout 2011 campaign with a 7-5, 6-3 win over No. 89 Carolina Lilley. Durisic is now 20-3 in dual match play and a perfect 9-0 against ACC opponents.
De Bruycker then sealed the win with her third straight victory over a ranked opponent with a 6-4, 6-2 beating of No. 46 Jillian O'Neill.
Lynn Blau got Georgia Tech on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court four over No. 125 McHale.
Carolina's final point of the day came at No. 6, as Lyons rallied from a set down to beat Kilborn in a third-set tiebreak, 6-7 (0), 6-1, 10-6.
The Yellow Jackets made the final score 5-2 on court three where No. 86 Ngo outlasted No. 81 Featherston, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5.
UNC will play its final regular season home match Sunday when the Tar Heels host No. 11 Clemson at 1 p.m. Durisic will be honored as the team's lone senior prior to the match.
