No. 3 UNC Extends Win Streak At Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- No. 3 North Carolina stretched its winning streak to eight matches Friday, defeating No. 24 Maryland, 5-2, at the Cole Tennis Courts. Jelena Durisic, Gina Suarez-Malaguti, Lauren McHale and Tessa Lyons were singles winners for the Tar Heels, who conclude their four-match road trip Sunday at Boston College.
Carolina (15-3, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) picked up the doubles points courtesy of wins on courts one and three. McHale and fellow sophomore Zoe De Bruycker were first to finish at the top position, defeating Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Jordaan Sanford, 8-3. After Maryland won at No. 2 doubles, Durisic and Jennifer Stone clinched the point with an 8-3 win over Jordan Hansbrough and Julia Huschke on court three.
Suarez-Malaguti quickly made it 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Welma Luus at No. 4 singles.
Durisic continued her strong play of late on court two, taking care of Sanford in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The Torrance, Calif., senior is now a team-best 14-3 in the dual match season, with wins in seven of eight.
McHale then clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Julia Huschke at No. 5 singles.
Maryland (11-3, 1-3), which entered the day riding a six-match winning streak of its own, got wins from Sanchez-Quintanar and Ana Belzunce on courts one and three, respectively.
Freshman Tessa Lyons finished the scoring at No. 6 singles, topping Jordan Hansbrough, 6-0, 7-5.
UNC concludes its four-match road trip Sunday with a 10 a.m. matchup against Boston College in Weymouth, Mass.
