ACC Semifinals vs Clemson
Carolina advances to the ACC championship game for the record 30th time (Duke has 29 entering its semifinal game today). The Tar Heels are now 30-14 in the semifinals. Carolina has won ACC Tournament championships in 1957, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1972, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1989, 1991, 1994, 1997, 1998, 2007 and 2008.
This was Carolina's 13th overtime game in ACC Tournament history and its first since beating Maryland 83-73 in Greensboro in the 1998 semifinals. The Tar Heels are now 9-4 in overtime in the ACC Tournament.
Carolina is now 15-1 against Clemson in the ACC Tournament and 86-39 against all opponents in the event.
The Tar Heels are 26-6 this year and have won nine consecutive games, 14 of their last 15 and 19 of their last 21 games.
Harrison Barnes notes on his 40-point game
Carolina overcame a 14-point deficit in the first half and a 10-point (28-38) deficit at halftime. The 10-point halftime deficit is the largest UNC has ever overcome to win an ACC Tournament game. The previous largest halftime deficit in a UNC win was nine points against Miami yesterday in the quarterfinals and against Duke in the 1969 championship game.
Prior to Carolina's wins over Miami and Clemson, no team in ACC Tournament history had ever rallied to win from halftime deficits of nine or more points in two games in the same year.
Carolina has now won five games this year in which it trailed by 10 or more points (19 against Miami in ACC quarterfinals, 16 against Virginia Tech in Chapel Hill, 14 at Miami, 14 against Clemson in the ACC semifinals and 11 at Virginia).
This is the second time this year the Tar Heels have rallied from double-digit deficits in the second half in consecutive games (also at Virginia and vs. Virginia Tech to begin ACC play).
John Henson had his fifth straight double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. He is the first Tar Heel with five double-doubles in a row since Tyler Hansbrough did that in December 2007.
Henson has 11 consecutive games with 10 or more rebounds. He is the first Tar Heel to do that since Billy Cunningham accomplished that in 40 straight games in 1962-64.
Henson blocked two shots today and has 101 for the season. He is just the second Tar Heel to ever block 100 or more shots in a season. Brendan Haywood swatted 120 in 2001.
Freshman point guard Kendall Marshall had nine assists today and has 48 in the last five games.
Roy Williams (640-161 overall in 801 games) is coaching in the conference championship game for the ninth time in 23 seasons. He was 4-2 in Big 8/12 championship games at Kansas and is 2-0 in ACC Tournament title games at UNC. His teams have won conference tournament championships in 1992, 1997, 1998, 1999 at KU and 2007 and 2008 at Carolina.
