CHAPEL HILL- It took No. 20 North Carolina just under two hours to dispatch Navy Tuesday afternoon, winning 7-0 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center behind strong singles performances up and down the lineup.
The Tar Heels moved to 3-1 on the young season, handed Navy their first loss of the spring and extended their streak of picking up doubles points with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
Stefan Hardy and Zach Hunter continue to pace the Tar Heels at No. 1 doubles, defeating Navy's Owen Bullard and Nick Birger 8-4. Jose Hernandez and William Parker, playing together in doubles for the first time this spring, clinched the doubles point when they beat Marcus Rebersak and Anderson Walls 8-5.
In singles, the Tar Heels swept the matches in quick succession. There were some notable bagels for the team from Annapolis. At No. 2, the 103rd-ranked Hardy dominated Rebersak 6-3, 6-0. Kyle Baker rolled Jeremy New 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4, and down at No. 6 Hunter made quick work of Walls, winning 6-0, 6-4. Jose Hernandez had a routine day at No. 1 singles, ousting Bullard 6-2, 6-4.
Head coach Sam Paul said that although he wasn't pleased with the loss at No. 2 doubles and the breaks of serve in the other two matches, he was happy with the overall play of the Tar Heels and is looking forward to the weekend.
"I'm pleased with the way we responded in singles," Paul said. "I think it helped to pick it up at the end, especially as we look forward to a very tough match down at Auburn on Saturday."
The Tar Heels are back in action Saturday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. when they travel to Auburn to take on the No. 28 Tigers.
