UNC coach Roy Williams (Opening Statement):
"Not a lot to say. We won. Bottom line. I was really impressed defensively with some of the things we did. I had a lot of confidence at the last 30 seconds, switch everything up, I felt like the big guy would come out and screen for Reggie (Jackson) on the ball and he did and took Z (Tyler Zeller) out and put John (Henson) in because John is just really so long he can bother some outside shots and still give you some space so it is harder to try to drive in.
"And I thought that it would go to Reggie, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that, he just made a big time three when it was a five-point game. Five possessions, I thought it was five possessions out of six, Steve corrected me, it was five straight possessions we had turnovers and you can't do those kinds of things. Z two turnovers, just throwing the ball, throwing it to me, hell I can shoot but I'd rather somebody on the court shoot when it counts. He had two turnovers, Kendall (Marshall) had two turnovers, Harrison (Barnes) had a turnover, and you can't play that way.
"You have got to give Boston College credit. We were great up there and we made every shot we looked and beat them badly; and they came in here very focused that we weren't going to do that and we did a good job rebounding the basketball. The rebound numbers look pretty good. But I think just defensively to get them to shoot 26 percent; and they had some open shots, but so did we. Sometimes you miss shots and feel very lucky to get out but I've been on that other side too."
On team's toughness this year:
"I don't think we showed it very much today. I mean, you're not going to be tough if you turn the ball over five straight possessions and take a bad shot and one of those other things. Toughness is doing the right thing. Toughness is the mental part. It's not just fighting. I mean, it's not just diving on the floor. Toughness to me is more of a mental state. I think that I would agree with you that for what we have shown a lot this year but I would not say that that was what we showed today. Sometimes it's the old saying you've got to be lucky or good, but I'd like to be lucky and good both. And at times, I think this team is really good."
Boston College Coach Steve Donahue (Opening Statement):
"Well, I was extremely proud of our group in terms of fouling and competing on every possession. Obviously we shot, I think we typically make our own. We didn't hang our heads at all. Something that, since I got here, we've been talking about just competing for forty minutes and I thought we did that today. Very proud of our effort. Wish they could've, for my guys' sake, that last shot would've went cause I thought we did everything we could to play with Carolina."
On what they did defensively to slow Carolina down:
"Well, we tried to learn a lesson when we played Carolina the last time. We did not do a very good job on the offensive end in terms of taking care of the ball, taking quick shots. I think we could have played this game like we typically done and played nice offense and we would have lost by a lot. We just couldn't afford to do that down here. So, the offensive rebounds, I'm surprised we got nine. We weren't sending anybody to the boards for the sake of setting our defense, getting back. I thought we executed well and made those shots. I know there was a lot of threes, but if you look at Carolina, they guard the lane so well. But, they don't necessarily guard the three well. You give up 36 percent from three, yet you're 40 overall. Most teams that are that good forty are down in the twenties guarding the three. And we're a team that shoots them. And I don't think we took a bad three all night. I thought we just didn't make them. And if you're going to win here, I thought that was the way to beat them."
UNC players
UNC PG Kendall Marshall:
On winning an Atlantic Coast Conference game despite scoring only 48 points:
"Defensively we have been doing a great job. We held [Boston College] to 20 points in the first half and 20 some-odd points [in the second half]. [Corey] Raji started getting hot from the three late in the game, they went on a big run. But our defense was able to withstand it."
On what seemed to be an offensive lull for Carolina in the last 10 minutes of the game:
"I think one of the hardest things to do in basketball is to play with a lead. I think we had got [our lead] up to 15 points and, at that time, it's hard to judge what's a good shot and what's a bad shot, working the clock, and things like that. Our time management wasn't that great and also, like I said, Raji started getting hot. He hit a couple shots and we had some defensive lapses."
On possibly being hesitant at one point to shoot from the three-point line:
"No, I wouldn't say that. I remember that play that you're talking about in the second half. I was hesitant because I had seen John [Henson] on the block and he's got a 6-5 player guarding him. And I think a better shot for our team is him doing that left-hand jump hook instead of me shooting a three."
UNC F John Henson:
On whether he got a piece of Reggie Jackson's shot attempt at the end of the game:
"No, his fingertips did hit my palm, so thank God for that because it was that close. I thought it was going in for a second, too. Thankfully, he missed it. Sometime you get lucky."
On coach Roy Williams' instruction for how to defend Boston College on their last possession:
"When the shot clock is winding down, we always switch because we don't want to give [the opponent] an advantage to the goal. So [Jackson] happened to get a screen and I had to switch and I played good `D'. And I'm fortunate for the miss."
On adjusting to Boston College's slower tempo throughout the game:
"It's just the flow of the game. Shots didn't really fall. You know, all we needed was for a couple more shots to fall and I think we would have blew the game open. But credit them. They knocked down a few threes and made some crucial baskets. It was a tough one for us, but glad we got the win."
UNC F Harrison Barnes:
On difficulty scoring the basketball against Boston College:
"It's very disappointing because, at this point in time, we have become a good team, we've got a lot of good wins underneath our belt. But we almost threw it away tonight."
On a much closer game against the Eagles compared to the blowout victory in Boston on February 1st:
"We didn't come out with the edge that we had in Boston and I think they took advantage of that. But there is a lot we cane learn from this game and we have got to get better."
