UNC Head Coach Roy Williams Quotes
Opening Statement:
"In the end it's a 'W' and it's Christmas time. I'm not going to be Scrooge by any means. We were really good for about the last four minutes of the first half and the first four or five minutes of the second half. And then we went brain dead there for a while. But you have to congratulate Jason (Capel) and his club for continuing to play and doing a nice job defensively and making some shots. You know at times I thought we did a nice job defensively but then in that stretch in there in the second half, what was somebody said we had our biggest lead was 29, then all of a sudden it was 15 or something like that. That happened in a stretch where Kendall (Marshall) pushes off throws the pass around behind his back and tries to throw it between 21,750 people, no 20,892 was all that was here tonight. So (Marshall) tried to throw a behind the back pass between those guys, and then we took bad shots. And during that stretch they did some really good things. So we might have to look at that five minutes on tape but it's a 'W'. I'm proud of our guys."
On offensive play
"We didn't even shoot it as well as we thought we would of but again that last four minutes was big for us."
On Reggie Bullock's confidence:
"He is more confident... He's healthier right now. He's paying better. He's defending better. He's rebounding better."
Appalachian State Head Coach Jason Capel
Opening Statement:
"I'm proud of the young men in my locker room. We talked about this being a building block of six new guys. We had some struggles and we worked this week, saying what it mans not just to play hard, but to compete. Nothing can prepare you for what you're going to see out there, but we tried to simulate it as much as possible. We didn't just play hard, we competed. We didn't take a step back when they clocked us in the mouth, we just kept coming forward. We got down 30 or 28, whatever it was, we stayed together. That's part of the process. I'm proud of the young men in our locker room. That's a heck of a team. We fought them tooth and nail and gave it our best shot. It's something we can build upon and we have to carry it over to the next game."
On coming back to Chapel Hill:
"I was a little nervous. I have to say Coach Williams took some of that away; he and I shared a moment. I haven't been back here a lot. It was good to come back. It was good to see a lot of faces, people I know, people that meant a lot. It was good to be home."
On how much playing here impacted his career:
"You work hard in life, you want to achieve great things. It was a dream of mine to come here. Some great people recruited me here. People treated me well, who I'll love forever."
UNC Players
Tyler Zeller
On establishing a rhythm:
"Tonight, he had to get better. We have to be more crisp. There were times where we played very, very well, and times where we played very poorly. It's something where we have to get in a rhythm and keep that up for 40 minutes."
On rust:
"Personally, I don't think so. I was very thankful to have finals over with so that I could just play basketball. Its something that we're young enough that there shouldn't be any rust. Finals are tough, they are exhausting, but you also have to play basketball."
John Henson
On a busy December schedule:
"It helps a lot. We like playing games, that's what we love to do the most, and hopefully we can keep pushing forward and get better. We have finals, we have to study really hard, we have to practice. But now we're back on schedule."
Reggie Bullock
On playing with confidence:
"I just had to come into the season playing my game. I know I'm a shooter, a rebounder, and a defender, so I just have to bring that to the team this year. I've been doing it consistently for a couple games, and I just need to keep it up and do it for the rest of the season."
Kendall Marshall
On his connection with Tyler Zeller:
"Z does a great job running. He kind of reminds me of a deer almost when he gets out and runs. When he gets in the post, he does such a great job of getting post depth and showing me his whole body, so I have no choice but to give him the ball."
On the play of John Henson and Tyler Zeller:
"We are never going to get away from our game plan, and our game plan is to work from the inside out. If it's working inside, we're going to keep on doing it. We didn't shoot as many threes today and the one's we did shoot didn't go in, but our bigs stepped up for us and we found a way to win."
