CHAPEL HILL --- North Carolina swept three doubles matches from Princeton and split singles matches with Virginia on the final day of the eighth annual Kitty Harrison Invitational Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Tar Heel freshman Caroline Price was the top singles finisher for UNC, placing fourth overall, while Zoe De Bruycker and Laura Slater took third in doubles.
De Bruycker and Slater finished a successful weekend with an 8-6 victory over Princeton's Hilary Bartlett and Lindsay Graff. Price and Tessa Lyons defeated Monica Chow and Katie Goepel, 8-2, while the senior duo of Haley Hemm and Jennifer Stone topped Joan Cannon and Caitlin Bartlett, 8-5.
Price needed an extended third-set tiebreak to knock of Virginia's Li Xi in singles. The Duluth, Ga., freshman rallied from a set down to outlast Xi, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (13). Lyons also won in a third-set tiebreak, beating Erin Vierra, 0-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7). Slater won in straight sets over Maria Fucillo, 6-4, 6-3.
The Kitty Harrison Invitational completes the fall schedule for the Tar Heels. Dual match play will begin on Jan. 18 with a doubleheader against Elon and UNC Greensboro in Chapel Hill.
