Tar Heels Fall At Wrestle For A Cure Duals

HARRISBURG, Pa. - North Carolina dropped its opening four duals of the season on Saturday as the Tar Heels fell to Illinois, Boston, Nebraska and Ohio State at the Wrestle For A Cure Duals in Harrisburg, Pa.
The Tar Heels opened against No. 8 Illinois and dropped a 32-9 dual as freshman Evan Henderson (141) and sophomore Corey Mock (157) were the only wrestlers able to secure points for the Tar Heels. Henderson pinned the Illini's Tucker Armstrong before Mock claimed a 9-5 decision over Illinois' Kyle Dooley.
Carolina jumped out to a 12-0 lead over Boston in its second dual of the day as Brian Bokoski (125) and Brock LiVorio (133) each claimed decisions for the Tar Heels and Henderson turned in his second pin of the day.
Bokoski posted an 8-5 decision over Boston's Chris McGinley and LiVorio followed with a narrow 11-9 decision over Ryan Dowd to put Carolina on a 6-0 lead. Henderson pinned Peter Ishiguro in just 35 seconds to double Carolina's lead to 12-0.
Jon Burns (149) and Mock dropped narrow decisions in the next two bouts as Boston would rattle off seven straight wins to claim the match.
In the closest dual of the day for the Tar Heels Carolina and Nebraska went into the final bout knotted at 16-16.
Nebraska claimed decisions in the opening two weight classes before Evan Henderson pinned his third straight opponent at 3:42 to even the match up before Burns and Mock pushed the Tar Heels in front.
Burns claimed a 9-4 decision at 149 before Mock rolled to an 8-0 major decision to put UNC in front 13-6. The teams would trade decisions at 165 and 174 with Thomas Ferguson posting a 3-1 decision at 174 to keep UNC ahead 16-9.
A major decision and overtime win at 184 and 197 helped the Cornhuskers knot the score at 16-16 going to heavyweight. No. 8 Tucker Lane of Nebraska lived up to his ranking as he posted a major decision, 10-0, over Frank Abbondanza who was moved up to heavyweight due to injuries among the Tar Heels.
In the final dual of the day the Tar Heels were unable to keep the momentum going as Ohio State claimed a 36-6 win. Henderson was the lone Tar Heel to secure a victory as he battled No. 15 Hunter Stieber for six minutes before getting his fourth straight pin to give the Tar Heels six points.
The Tar Heels will have a weekend off next week before heading to the Northeast Duals in Latham, N.Y. to face Lehigh, Penn and Rutgers on Nov. 26.
