CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Second-ranked North Carolina stayed undefeated in Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey play and earned its ninth shutout of the season Saturday with a 2-0 win over No. 9 Boston College at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The Tar Heels improved to 12-1 overall and 3-0 in ACC play with the win while B.C. fell to 8-5 overall (1-3 ACC).
"I thought it was an outstanding defensive effort by our entire team," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "This is the best Boston College team I've seen since they joined the league and our team had to play incredibly well together, defensively and offensively, to get the two-goal shutout. "
The shutout was UNC's fifth in a row. The Tar Heels last allowed a goal on Sept. 21 in a 5-1 win over Longwood.
Tar Heel junior Kelsey Kolojejchick scored the gamewinner in the 28th minute of play when she dribbled into the circle and lofted a shot into the top of the cage over the head of Boston College goalkeeper Nicole Barry. Kolojejchick's goal was her team-high 13th of the season.
"Sophie Rudolph got a touch on the ball to create the opportunity and the finish was outstanding," Shelton said. "She read the goalie and got the little flick over her. It was a great play by a great player.
UNC added to the lead at the 54:38 mark when the Eagles were whistled for a penalty and Carolina was awarded its first penalty stroke of the season. Sophomore Marta Malmberg sent her shot into the upper left side of the cage to put the Tar Heels up 2-0.
UNC finished with 17 shots and six corners, five of them in the second half. Boston College had seven shots and five corners, four in the first half.
arry made six saves in goal for the Eagles. Freshman keeper Sassi Ammer had four for UNC in playing all 70 minutes.
The Tar Heels played in pink socks for Turn It Pink Day, which helped to raise funds to benefit the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Care Center.
Next up for Carolina is a non-conference game against Appalachian State, on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Henry Stadium.
