Tar Heels Split Bouts With No. 4 Virginia Tech, Clarion

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Corey Mock, Thomas Ferguson and Zac Bennett registered two victories apiece as North Carolina split an afternoon doubleheader with Virginia Tech and Clarion Saturday at Carmichael Arena. The Tar Heels fell to No. 4 Virginia Tech 25-9 before rebounding to defeat Clarion 32-10.
Carolina now stands at 5-5 overall and is 0-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference after the loss to the Hokies. Virginia Tech improves to 12-3 with the win while Clarion drops to 3-1 after the defeat.
Mock, Ferguson and Bennett all recorded decisions over Virginia Tech and pins against the Golden Eagles to lead Carolina. Jake Corrill, Pat Owens, Danny Lopes and Antonio Giorgio each split their two contests on the day.
#4 Virginia Tech 25, North Carolina 9
Virginia Tech raced out to a 12-0 lead by verge of four straight decisions by ranked Hokies to open the match. Carolina got on the board when Mock upset fifth-ranked Jesse Dong at 157 pounds. Mock took control with an early takedown and used two two-point near falls in the second period to add to the lead on his way to registering an 11-5 decision.
After No. 14 Pete Yates of Virginia Tech defeated Thomas Scotton 2-0 at 165 pounds, UNC's Ferguson recorded a 7-5 victory over Matt Epperly. Ferguson logged a takedown and a near fall in the match's first 17 seconds to jump out to a 4-0 lead, which he held throughout.
At 184 pounds, Virginia Tech's John Dickson pinned Giorgio to put the Hokies up 21-6 and clinch the match. Carolina's final victory of the bout came at 197 pounds, where Bennett defeated Chris Penny 9-6 in a back-and-forth affair. A major decision victory at heavyweight by the Hokies' David Marone made the final score 25-9.
North Carolina 32, Clarion 10
Carolina won seven of the 10 weight classes in rolling to a 32-9 victory over Clarion. The Tar Heels struck first and led 10-0 after decisions by freshmen Corrill and Owens and a major decision by 141-pounder Lopes.
After Clarion got on the board with a win at 149 pounds, Mock lengthened the Tar Heels lead with a first-period pin. Ferguson and Bennett also recorded pins as each won their second bout of the day and Giorgio grabbed a major decision victory at 184 pounds.
Clarion's victories came from Anthony White (149), Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (165) and Quintas McCorkle (heavyweight).
