NORFOLK, Va. - The No. 2 North Carolina men's soccer team fell by a 2-1 margin Tuesday night at Old Dominion dropping the Tar Heels to 5-2 on the season. Sophomore Enzo Martinez tallied his third goal of the season in the defeat. Carolina will look to rebound on Friday when it heads back to Virginia to take on the fourth-ranked Cavaliers.
The Tar Heels went into Tuesday's tussle with the Monarchs looking for a sixth straight win and looked to be on that way less than 25 minutes into the contest.
Sophomore Enzo Martinez put Carolina in front with his third goal of the season at the 24:14 mark of the opening half. Redshirt Freshman Josh Rice fired a shot on goal that was saved by ODU's Evan Newton. Martinez was on the doorstep waiting on the rebound which he deposited into the back of the net to put Carolina in front 1-0.
Carolina looked to take the lead into the break but Gideon Asante had different plans. Asante tallied the equalizer with less than a minute to play in the opening stanza off an assist from Yannick Smith.
Martinez nearly picked up his second goal of the game in the 51st minute but his shot struck the post but the shot began a Tar Heel offensive outburst that saw nine shots in a span of 15 minutes.
The Tar Heels put four of the nine shots on frame but were unable to beat Newton and take the lead.
The Old Dominion defense stiffened from that point on allowing just two more Tar Heel shots in the final 20 minutes.
Asante struck again in the 80th minute providing the difference maker on a breakaway attack. Shane Howard found the streaking Asante to put the Tar Heels in a late hole.
The Tar Heels were able to draw a corner with two minutes remaining but were unable to come up with a shot on goal as they dropped their second contest of the season.
Carolina will not have much time to think about the loss as the Tar Heels head to Charlottesville, Va. on Friday to take on No. 4 Virginia at 7 p.m.
