
Men In Fifth Place After First Day Of ACCs

Multis Daniel Keller and Mateo Sossah grabbed six top-two marks between them to hold second and third places for the first half of the men's decathlon for the University of North Carolina's first day of competition at the 2010 ACC Outdoor Championships on Thursday. The men's team is currently in fifth place with 11 points and the women's team is in ninth place with five points.
Keller threw farthest among the decathletes for the shot put at 43-3 1/4 and he tied Sossah along with one other student-athlete for the highest mark in the high jump at 6-7 1/2. Sossah was next behind Keller in the shot put at 42-11 1/2, leaped farthest in the long jump at 23-0 1/2 and also tabbed a second-highest ranking in the 400 at 49.36. Matthew Villemain is currently in fifth place and Chadd Pierce is in eighth to represent the Tar Heels. All of the men's multis' marks are listed below as they will finish up the decathlon on Friday.
Kwabena Keene scored the first points for the men's team at the championships with his fifth-place finish in the discus. Keene reached a personal record 173-10. Emory Parsons also scored in the discus throwing a season-high 164-1 for seventh place. In the javelin, Brian Doran earned a personal record 178-9 throw.
Evan Watchempino added to the men's team total with a fourth place finish in the 10,000. He clocked in at 29:47.72.
On the women's side, Mariana Lucena, competing in her first track conference championship, placed seventh in the 10,000 running 35:47.93. Gabby Gioia also earned points with her sixth-place 141-6 javelin throw while also competing in the heptathlon.
Alexandra Coppadge leads Carolina's women in the heptathlon ranking fourth after the first four events on Thursday. Ariel Roberts began the heptathlon but will be unable to finish the events.
