CARY, N.C. - Martin Murphy headed home a cross from Kirk Urso less than 16 minutes into Wednesday night's ACC Tournament quarterfinal game against NC State as the No. 4 Tar Heels cruised to a 4-0 win over the rival Wolfpack at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Sophomore Enzo Martinez added a brace, while senior Michael Farfan turned in the prettiest goal of the night in the 63rd minute. The Tar Heels will take on Boston College on Friday at 8 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park.
Carolina used another perfect short corner in the 16th minute to get on the board early as Kirk Urso dropped a pass to Michael Farfan who cued up the ball for Urso who bent the ball near post where Martin Murphy was waiting patiently. Murphy headed the cross past the keeper and into the side of the net for the game's opening score.
Murphy nearly made it two-nil less than two minutes later when he blasted a shot from 23 yards out that found the right post and bounced wide.
In the 28th minute, Matt Rose sent in a perfect ball from just inside the midline that found its way into the box and over the Wolfpack defense. Enzo Martinez was on the receiving end but was unable to control the ball as NC State's Carlos Villa was able to smother the ball and the scoring opportunity.
Martinez would not be denied just a few minutes later when Rose sent in another perfect ball that Martinez was ready to convert and did just that blasting a shot past Villa into the lower left corner of the goal.
The Tar Heels would finish the half with an 8-1 shot advantage as the Tar Heels controlled possession in the midfield thanks to the return of senior Stephen McCarthy.
NC State put up a fight in the early going of the second half registering a pair of shots but never tested goalkeeper Scott Goodwin and the Tar Heel defense.
At the hour mark of the contest the Tar Heels regained control and started attacking the Wolfpack once again. Michael Farfan had a shot blocked at the 61:59 mark before Kirk Urso sent in a free kick from 35 yards out that Villa was forced to punch over the crossbar.
On the ensuing corner kick, Dustin McCarty found the ball at his feet and fired a shot in but Villa was equal to the task. Villa was not as lucky in the 66th minute as he was not able to get to a shot by Farfan.
Alex Dixon made a run down the right side and fed a ball to Farfan at the top of the box who shook a pair of defenders and lofted a bending shot into the top left corner of the goal to extend the lead to 3-0.
Martinez picked up the brace in the 81st minute when he stuck in a shot from eight yards out after Carlos McCrary fed a ball to his feet. The Rock Hill, S.C., native put the shot away with ease to seal the 4-0 win.
The win was the 50th for the Tar Heels in the Triangle Derby with NC State as Carolina now holds a 50-28-12 advantage over the Wolfpack.
The four-goal advantage was the largest in school history for the Tar Heels in ACC Tournament play and Carolina will now advance to its 12th ACC semifinal in the 24th edition of the ACC Tournament.
Carolina will take on Boston College at 8 p.m. on Friday at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
