JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Sophomore forward Enzo Martinez scored less than four minutes into overtime Saturday night as the fourth-ranked Tar Heels (13-2-1) claimed a 2-1 win over East Tennessee State (12-5-0) in Johnson City, Tenn. Joining Martinez on the scoresheet was junior Kirk Urso who scored in the 13th minute for his fourth goal of the year. Up next for Carolina is a visit from the Clemson Tigers for senior night festivities on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.
Junior Kirk Urso put the Tar Heels in front in the 13th minute when he recorded his fourth goal of the season. Carolina earned a corner kick that Urso took and dropped off to Enzo Martinez who settled it for the junior midfielder. Urso fired a shot on goal after the short corner and was able to bend it into the goal, his second such goal on the year.
The Tar Heels managed just one shot the rest of the first half as Alex Walters put one on net in the 43rd minute that ETSU's Ronnie Hreha was able to save. The Buccaneers outshot the Tar Heels 5-2 in the opening 45 minutes.
Carolina changed things around in the second half as they were able to tally nine shots to ETSU's six but the Buccaneers were the ones that found the back of the net.
The Tar Heels looked to be en route to their 13th win of the year as the clock slowly ticked towards 90 minutes but the Buccaneers struck with less than three minutes remaining to even things up.
Aaron Schoenfeld picked up his sixth goal of the year when he redirected a Theo Yang cross past Scott Goodwin to even the score at 1-1.
Freshman Robbie Lovejoy and Kirk Urso both tried to break the tie in the final minutes but were unable as the game went into extra time.
ETSU was playing a man down in the extra session as Jaron Westbrook was issued a red card in the closing seconds of regulation.
The Tar Heels took advantage right away as Jordan Gafa found a streaking Enzo Martinez with a perfect through ball. Martinez settled the pass and beat the keeper with a low shot that gave Carolina the 2-1 win.
Carolina improves to 13-2-1 on the year and will have a chance at an outright ACC regular season title on Friday when they host Clemson. The Tar Heels need either a draw or a win to claim the title for the first time in school history.
Kick off is set for 7 p.m. with senior night festivities scheduled beforehand.
