Tar Heels Mash Miami 3-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Emily McGee, Courtney Johnston and Christine Vaughen combined for 27 kills to lead North Carolina over Miami in straight sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-21) Friday night at Carmichael Arena. Carolina wins their tenth straight match to improve to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in the ACC.
Kaylie Gibson reeled in 22 digs to anchor the Carolina defense. Senior Suzanne Haydel chipped in 17 digs and added five kills. Cora Harms and Erica Behm fueled the Tar Heel attack collaborating for 37 assists.
"We learn more and more about our team every time we come out," said head coach Joe Sagula. "We are learning that this can be a good team night in and night out. Our defense was tremendous and Kaylie Gibson played another great match."
Vaughen smashed five kills in just seven swings to give Carolina a 25-21 first frame win. Johnston and McGee combined for nine kills as the Tar Heels registered a 76% sideout percentage. UNC led by as many as six and trailed just once to own a 1-0 match lead.
UNC never trailed in the second frame to push in front 2-0 with a 25-17 win. The Tar Heels forced nine Miami attack errors holding an impressive attack to just a .023 hitting percentage. Haydel posted nine digs and three kills as Carolina led by as many as eight in the second.
The Tar Heels carried their momentum in the third frame jumping out to their biggest lead of the match at 16-3. Miami crawled back to slice the Carolina lead to just two at 23-21, but Carolina held on for a 25-21 set win and 3-0 match victory.
Carolina's 10 match win-streak is their longest since a 13 match streak in 2002. The 5-0 ACC start is their best since a 8-0 start in the same year. UNC has now won nine matches by the score of 3-0 in 2010.
The Tar Heels will be back in action next Wednesday Oct. 6 traveling to Wake Forest. Carolina will meet rival Duke next Friday Oct. 8 in Durham.
