NOTRE DAME, Ind. --- No. 17 North Carolina won a tight doubles point before sweeping all six singles matches in a 7-0 win over No. 33 Boise State to open the ITA Kickoff Weekend Saturday afternoon at Notre Dame's Eck Tennis Pavilion. With the victory, Carolina advances to face the winner of Notre Dame-DePaul match for a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
Carolina (4-0) won all three doubles matches to open up an early 1-0 lead. No. 22 Katrina Tsang and Shinann Featherston got things started with an 8-3 victory over Bianca Jochimsen and Stephanie Jasper at No. 2. The Tar Heels then got the win in a top-25 showdown at the top position to clinch the doubles point. No. 6 Sophie Grabinski and Sanaz Marand outlasted No. 24 Pichittra Thongdach and Lauren Megale, 8-5, giving UNC the first point of the day.
Featherston was first off for Carolina in singles, and the Rockaway Park, N.Y., sophomore continued her standout play at the No. 6 position. Featherston won in straight sets for the fourth time in as many dual matches, topping Rocio Frej, 6-2, 6-1.
No. 25 Marand made it 3-0, dropping just one game in disposing of Megale, 6-0, 6-1. Grabinski clinched the team victory at No. 5, topping Elyse Edward, 6-0, 6-3.
Jelena Durisic and Zoe De Bruycker added their own straight-set triumphs, pushing the Tar Heels to a 6-0 advantage.
The final match of the day was late getting started due to a water leak on court one, and No. 100 Tsang quickly fell behind a set and 3-0 to No. 44 Thongdach. But the Raleigh, N.C., senior was able to turn it around, rallying to win six of seven games to take the second set and outlasting Thongdach in a third-set tiebreak, 10-4.
Carolina will await the winner of Notre Dame-DePaul, with the winner of Sunday's matchup advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, Feb. 12-15 at the University of Wisconsin's Nielson Tennis Stadium.
