
Tar Heels Fare Well On Opening Day Of Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. - The North Carolina track and field teams opened competition at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. on Friday and picked up impressive performances out of several underclassmen. Sophomore Travis Leonard claimed the triple jump as he cleared 6-7, while Dominique Jackson captured the 400-meter dash in 55.79. The Tar Heels will wrap up competition in Durham on Saturday.
On the women's side, freshman Michelle Lutz claimed a seventh place finish in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:40.99. Abby Kimball cleared 11-9 3/4 in the pole vault as she finished fifth in the event. Jackson fell less than a second shy of a regional mark in the 400 as she took the top overall spot in 55.79.
On themen's side, sophomore Adam Cunningham clocked a 3:49.70 in the 1500-meter run. Cunningham's time was less than two seconds shy of a regional mark. Freshman Kyle Milks was not far behind Cunningham as he finished 17th in a time of 3:55.94. Sophomore Evan Watchempino claimed a seventh place finish in the 5000-meter run on Friday with a time of 14:35.02, while Zack Dawson finished in 11th finishing in 14:45.67.
Travis Leonard finished first in the high jump with a top leap of 6-7 for his first win of the year. Elsewhere in the the field events Daniel Keller opened the outdoor season with a throw of 164-8 in the javelin for 13th place.
