TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --- No. 15 North Carolina captured the doubles point and held a 2-1 lead early in singles play but succumbed to a furious Florida State rally, as the Tar Heels fell to the host Seminoles, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. Junior Katrina Tsang continued her strong run of late with a 6-4, 6-1 win over No. 56 Katie Rybakova, but UNC dropped its second straight road dual match in this Florida swing.
Tsang teamed with senior Austin Smith to set the tone early in doubles with an 8-3 win over FSU's Federica Suess and Jessica Sucupira at the top of the lineup. The senior duo of Laura Reichert and Meg Fanjoy then sealed the point with an 8-5 win at No. 2 over Lauren Macfarlane and Bonny Davidson.
UNC (12-6, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) and FSU (8-6, 1-4 ACC) split the first two singles matches to complete, leaving the Tar Heels with the last lead they would enjoy for the afternoon. No. 76 Suess topped sophomore Jelena Durisic, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 to briefly tie the match before No. 93 Tsang finished off No. 56 Rybakova, 6-4, 6-1.
The 'Noles would take control from there, however, winning the final four matches to clinch a 5-2 victory, their first in league play. Sucupira defeated Jocelyn Ffriend at No. 6 before Macfarlane bested Smith at No. 3. Ania Rynarzewska's win over Reichert at No. 5 sealed the Florida State win and No. 44 Noemie Scharle completed the match with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 53 Marand at No. 2.
UNC will conclude its marathon nine-match road swing next weekend when the Tar Heels visit Boston College on March 27 and Maryland on March 29.
