HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. --- No. 17 North Carolina improved to 12-4 on the season with a pair of wins over East Carolina and No. 55 Old Dominion Wednesday at the Port Royal Racquet Club. UNC did not drop a set in a 7-0 sweep over ECU in the morning match and then handled the nationally-ranked Monarchs, 5-2, in the afternoon matchup. No. 47 Sanaz Marand headed the lineup in both wins, scoring a pair of straight-set victories at No. 1 singles.
Carolina dominated the morning session against the Pirates (9-3), winning all six singles matches in straight sets after sweeping three doubles matches. With the Tar Heels dealing with a number of injuries and illnesses throughout the roster, freshmen Jocelyn Ffriend and Stefi Gjine and senior Meg Fanjoy came up big at the bottom of the lineup. Ffriend and Gjine won their respective matches at No. 4 and No. 6 without dropping a game, while Fanjoy cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
In the afternoon win over ODU, Carolina took control with a pair of wins in doubles matches that featured top-100 tandems. At No. 1, fourth-ranked Marand and Sophie Grabinski rolled past No. 34 Nadine Fahoum and Charleen Haarhoff, 8-1, while No. 47 Katrina Tsang and Austin Smith dispatched No. 79 Joanna Dobrowolska and Irina Dementyeva, 8-4, at No. 2. Fanjoy and fellow senior Laura Reichert completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3.
Ffriend and Gjine were pivotal in singles for the second time on the day against the Lady Monarchs. After No. 105 Haarhoff evened the team score with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Smith at No. 2, Ffriend put UNC back in front with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Margarita Spicin. Marand made it 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 99 Fahoum before Gjine clinched the match with a second 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6.
UNC will enjoy the rest of Spring Break in South Carolina before resuming its nine-match road trip with an ACC showdown at Miami on March 20.
