No. 11 Tar Heels Bounce Back To Top No. 68 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. --- No. 11 North Carolina won five of six singles matches and rebounded from a pair of tough losses to top No. 68 Wisconsin, 6-1, in a consolation match Sunday at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium. UNC will return home for a pair of non-conference matches before traveling to Notre Dame and Northwestern Feb. 27 and March 1.
UNC (7-2) captured the doubles point for the ninth consecutive match thanks to some impressive play at Nos. 2 and 3. Senior Austin Smith and junior Katrina Tsang disposed of Katya Mirnova and Aleksandra Markovic, 8-1, at No. 2, and the senior duo of Laura Reichert and Meg Fanjoy shutout Elizabeth Dolan and Dana Larsen at No. 3.
The odd-numbered positions were first on in singles play, and Carolina swept the host Badgers to clinch the team victory. No. 47 Sanaz Marand rolled past Elizabeth Carpenter, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, No. 99 Smith handled Mirnova, 7-6 (6), 6-2, at No. 3 and Jelena Durisic topped Angela Chupa at No. 5, 7-5, 6-2.
Tsang and Reichert added straight-set wins for the Tar Heels to make it 6-0, with Wisconsin's Markovic outlasting Sophie Grabinski, 7-6 (3), 3-6, (10-8), to close out the match.
Carolina will host in-state foes Davidson and Elon on Wednesday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Davidson match is set to begin at 2:30, with the Elon match to follow at 7.
