UNC v. Presbyterian (Dec. 12, 2009)
UNC Head Coach: Roy Williams
Opening Statement:
"Well, we had terrible practices Thursday and Friday. So I challenged them to get more out of this game than they did any of the practices we had the last few days. And I think we did.
"It was disconcerting, to the least, to not have Marcus Ginyard. We knew that [we would not have Ginyard] yesterday, but we didn't know that we would not have Dexter Strickland until this morning. So we tried to put some lineups out there that we have not used very often. But I thought we were so much more active defensively in the first half. We made shots, we didn't give them any second shots; and we got shots, so that was the ballgame in the first half.
"In the second half, I didn't think we had quite the same intensity, which is natural human reaction with that big a lead. But I think you have to congratulate Presbyterian. They shot 57 percent in the second half, and 58 percent from the three-point line. I think they broke us down a little more off the dribble and we weren't as active getting out and getting a hand in their face. But I think Gregg Nibert would be happy--maybe not about the game--but about the way his team played in the second half.
"I think that Ed [Davis] was really good for us. I tried to keep Deon Thompson's minutes down because he has tendinitis in his knees that has been acting up. So to get him only 18 minutes, I was pleased with that. We had 12 guys play at least 12 minutes, so that part I like. But I didn't like that Presbyterian shot 57 percent in the second half. But Larry Drew II's lines of nine assists and one turnover is really good."
Presbyterian Head Coach Gregg Nibert
Opening Statement:
"Obviously as Roy [Williams] told me after the game, they really played well in that first half, and they proved they really are the No. 10 team in the country. We were hoping we could make them shoot the three and hopefully try to keep it from the inside, but they're so long and do such a good job passing and cutting through there. They got the ball inside, and we had a tough time blocking them out with 17 offensive rebounds. They can just hurt you in so many ways, and even losing [Marcus] Ginyard they didn't miss a beat. We were a little shell-shocked to begin the game. We missed some shots, and I was proud of our guys the way we played through it in the second half. I couldn't be prouder of our guys and the way they battled through the second half."
