
No. 18 North Carolina Victorious In Season Opener

No. 18 North Carolina opened its 2009 season in style defeating both UNC Greensboro and Gardner-Webb with 7-0 scores Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center. From start to finish, the Tar Heels held control of their opponents as they were victorious across the board.
UNC (2-0) started strong against UNCG (0-1), as No. 15 Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski defeated Alejandra Guerra and Arielle VonStrolley 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Similarly, the No. 12 team of Katrina Tsang and Shinann Featherston defeated Valeria Behr and Lucy Daugherty at No. 2 doubles and Meg Fanjoy and Laura Reichert defeated Jessica Eblen and Britney Cloer at No. 3 doubles with matching scores of 8-2.
The Tar Heels triumphed in singles action as well. No. 47 Marand defeated Guerra 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, while Katrina Tsang defeated VonStrolley and No. 103 Austin Smith defeated Behr at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, with matching scores of 6-2, 6-1. Jelena Durisic, Grabinski and Featherston all added wins to secure the shut out.
The afternoon match against Gardner-Webb was another success as the Tar Heels were victorious in all nine matches. Tsang and Smith teamed up to defeat Laura Kriett and Rita Gouveia at No. 1 doubles with a score of 8-0. Featherston and Reichert defeated Jenny Gomez and Tavenner Black with a score of 8-0 and Haley Hemm and Linzee Mabrey defeated Amy Beavers and Kasey Ellis 8-1 at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
In singles, Smith took on the No. 1 position defeating Kriett with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Reichert and Meg Fanjoy also defeated their opponents 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 and 5 spots. Featherston dropped just two games at the No. 3 position defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-2 and Jocelyn Ffriend dropped just one game at the No. 6 position. Durisic rounded out the wins defeating Gomez at the number two position 6-3, 6-2.
The Tar Heels' next home match will take place Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. as they take on Florida. In the meantime, Carolina will travel to Williamsburg, Va., for the opening weekend of the ITA National Indoor Championship. On Jan. 31, UNC will face Michigan at 2 p.m. The winner of that match will face the winner of Texas-William & Mary for a spot in the final 16 in Madison.
