ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. --- Fifth-seeded North Carolina took care of 12th-seeded Maryland in short order Thursday morning, cruising to a 4-0 win in the first round of the ACC Championships at Sanlando Park. UNC got wins at the top two doubles positions and the top three singles spots to earn a meeting with fourth-seeded Clemson Friday morning at 9. The Tar Heels defeated the Lady Tigers, 4-3, on March 22 in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels (17-7) altered their doubles lineup slightly, with No. 46 Austin Smith and Katrina Tsang moving from their usual No. 2 position up to the top spot. Sanaz Marand, who normally plays with Sophie Grabinski at No. 1, teamed with Meg Fanjoy at No. 2. The shuffle had no ill effect on Carolina, as Marand and Fanjoy were first off with an 8-3 win over Maggie MacKeever and Karin Lundmark. Soon after, Smith and Tsang finished off Michal Amir and Lisa Miller at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point.
Singles also went off without much difficulty, as the Tar Heels captured three straight-set victories to secure the match. No. 29 Tsang was first off with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Lundmark. No. 10 Marand, who has lost just one singles match all spring, then topped Amir, 6-3, 6-1. No. 103 Smith finished the job for Carolina, dropping MacKeever, 6-2, 6-3, to end the match.
