No. 13 UNC Bounces Back With 4-3 Win Over No. 34 Clemson

CHAPEL HILL --- No. 13 North Carolina scored its first win over Clemson in seven meetings when the Tar Heels topped the Lady Tigers, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Junior Austin Smith and sophomore Katrina Tsang rallied from a 6-4 hole at No. 2 doubles to defeat Estefania Balda and Federica van Adrichem, 9-7, and clinch what would prove to be the deciding doubles point.
Clemson (5-9, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) quickly evened the score with Carol Salge's 6-0, 6-2, win over Laura Reichert at No. 4 singles. No. 95 Smith put UNC (12-5, 3-1 ACC) back in front, however, as the Hilton Head Island, S.C., product handled No. 124 van Adrichem in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Junior Sophie Grabinksi then pushed the Tar Heels to the brink of victory with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Alexandra Luc at No. 6.
Ina Hadziselimovic pulled the Lady Tigers to within one at 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over junior Meg Fanjoy at No. 5, setting the stage for a pair of dramatic finishes at the top of the lineup to decide the match.
After dropping the first set to Balda at No. 2, No. 27 Tsang won five straight games in the second stanza to even the match at a set each. With the final set knotted at 4-4, Tsang broke Balda and served out the match for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory to secure the Tar Heel victory.
The final match off was at No. 1 singles, where No. 9 Sanaz Marand and No. 2 Mijacika split the first two sets. Marand opened the final set with five straight games, only to see Mijacika win six of the next seven games plus the tiebreak for a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 victory.
Next up for Carolina is a trip to the Sunshine State, as the Tar Heels will face Florida State on March 28 and Miami on March 30.
