SAN JUAN, P.R. --- No. 11 North Carolina won its fifth dual match in a row with a 7-0 sweep of Princeton Saturday afternoon in Puerto Rico. Reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week Sanaz Marand improved to a perfect 14-0 in singles play this spring with her straight-set victory at the top of the Tar Heel lineup.
Carolina (11-4) took the doubles point for the sixth match in a row with a trio of wins. Marand and fellow sophomore Katrina Tsang were first off with an 8-2 victory over Rebecca Parks and Taylor Marable at No. 1. Senior Alexandra Jurewitz and junior Laura Reichert then clinched the point by finishing off an 8-5 victory over Sarah Hoffman and Melissa Saiontz at No. 3. Juniors Austin Smith and Sophie Grabinski needed a tiebreak to complete the sweep, defeating Ivana King and Sarah Huah at No. 2, 8-7 (0).
Princeton (6-6) continued to be competitive in singles, but the Tar Heels were too much. Reichert and Fanjoy dropped just four games between them in making it 3-0 with straight-set victories at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions, respectively.
Marand, the No. 10 singles player in the nation, then sealed the victory with her 14th consecutive win, a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over No. 75 Saiontz.
Grabinski rolled past Huah, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5 before UNC needed tiebreaks to get wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
No. 26 Tsang rallied from down a set to top King at No. 2, while No. 100 Smith took care of Marable at No. 3. Both matches ended with match tiebreaks instead of full third sets.
Carolina will complete its Spring Break trip Sunday against No. 61 Illinois.
