VESTAL, N.Y. - Seniors Keegan Mueller and Vincent Ramirez and junior Dennis Drury each went unbeaten Sunday to lead North Carolina to a 2-1 record at Binghamton University's Journeymen/Brute Sprawl & Brawl at West Gym. The Tar Heels (2-4) picked up their first dual victory on the young season with a 27-10 win over Binghamton and rebounded from a 21-11 loss to West Virginia with a 33-3 win over Rutgers to close the day.
Drury, who was seeing his first action of the season at 197 pounds, recorded a pair of major decisions to pace Carolina in its first two matches. Drury opened his day with a 9-0 blanking of Binghamton's Corey Waite and followed with a 13-5 victory over WVU's Brandon Boyer. He closed with a 5-0 shut out of the Scarlet Knights' Karim Mahmoud and is 3-0 on the season.
The 20th-ranked Mueller added a major of his own against Binghamton's Ryan McGarity (12-4) at 165 and then posted a pair of decisions to close his day. Mueller scored a 3-0 win over West Virginia's Christian Mory and followed with a 7-2 decision over Matt Pletcher of Rutgers to improve to 8-3 this season.
Ranked 16th at 141, Ramirez followed a 7-4 decision against the Bearcats' Anwar Goeres with a 12-3 major over the Mountaineers' Colin Johnston in his first two bouts. Ramirez claimed his third victory with a 6-0 decision against David Greenwald of Rutgers to run his record to a team-best 9-1 record.
Sophomore Nick Stabile also had a big day, recording a pair of pins at 149 and a 2-1 record.
Against the host Bearcats, Carolina found itself in an early hole but reeled off five straight wins to jump out to a 19-6 lead it would not relinquish. Stabile registered his first pin of the day at 149, and Mueller, Drury and heavyweight Justin Dobies each picked up major decisions as the Tar Heels extended their lead to the 17-point final margin.
Ramirez's major against West Virginia brought the Tar Heels within a 6-4 margin, but the Mountaineers came back with two more victories before Mueller cut the lead to 12-7. After two more WVU wins, Drury scored his second major of the afternoon for the Tar Heels' final points. Dobies, ranked 13th at heavyweight, suffered a 5-3 loss to No. 14 Dustin Rodgers in the final match.
Against Rutgers, the Tar Heels dropped their first match, but came back with nine straight victories to notch the 33-3 victory. Stabile, who dropped Dave Seidenberg in just 2:15 at 149, and junior Kevin Owen, who stopped Keith Dobish in 6:04 at 174, each picked up key pins to lead UNC to the 30-point victory.
