
Tar Heels Open Fall Season At St. Mary's Classic

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of North Carolina women's tennis team opened its 2007 fall campaign Friday at the St. Mary's Classic hosted by the University of Tennessee. Due to inclement weather, all singles play was postponed until Saturday, but the full schedule of doubles action was completed.
In flight one, the tandem of Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski scored a 9-7 win over Georgia's Kelley and Yvette Hyndman, the No. 19 doubles team in the nation. Meg Fanjoy and Alexandra Jurewitz topped Tara Byrne and Tara Sheets of East Tennessee State 8-2 in flight three, while Laura Reichert and Jelena Durisic fell to Cosmina Ciobanu and Kristen Rafael of Notre Dame 8-4 in flight two.
Semifinal doubles action as well as quarterfinal and semifinal singles play will continue Saturday. Eight Tar Heels will be on the court in singles, led by No. 39 Marand in flight one and No. 80 Austin Smith in flight two.
