CARY, N.C. - After playing two marathon matches in the quarterfinals and semifinals, the No. 6 North Carolina men's tennis team had little energy left in the tank Sunday and it fell to No. 2 Virginia 5-0 in the ACC Tournament final at the Cary Tennis Center. The Tar Heels were seeking their 26th ACC title.
UNC falls to 23-3 overall while Virginia improves to 26-3. The Cavaliers won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 and then the Wahoos' nationally-ranked players swept the singles at the top three spots and added a win at No. 6 singles to bring the final score to 5-0.
UNC was playing in its first ACC championship match since 2002. The Tar Heels are virtually assured a Top 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament which means Carolina would host an NCAA regional at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill May 11 and 12. NCAA bids and host sites will be announced May 1.
